NLS 1 - 14 to RT 0-07 Senior Shields Cup Quarter Final
NLS 1-13 to RT 1-04 Reserve Football League
report
North London
Shamrocks had their second double header of the season in Donkey Lane on S
aturday and a successful outing ensued again as both the Senior and reserve
teams won their respective matches.
The first team
defeated a strong Round Towers in the Sean Shields cup quarter final 1- 14 to
0- 7. The Shamrocks got off to a great start building up a strong early lead
in a very fast flowing game, with plenty of hard hitting but fair exchanges
between both sides. The first score for the Shamrocks was the best move of the
game, from a quick kick out, Vinny Murphy picked out Padraig 'Willy' Whelan who
fed a lovely through ball to scott conroy on the 40, the laois man turning
exquislitely and pointing. This score got the ball rolling for the shamrocks,
with more 3 scores folowing before Round Towers replied. Sean Dunne was
instrumental in midfield for the Shamrocks, everything went through him, and he
found space time and time again to deliver quick ball to the full forward
line. The scoreline at half time read 1- 8 to 0 - 02 points to the Shamrocks.
Many hoped for a rout, but the Towers fought back wel in the second half, and
the intensity dropped, shamrocks still matched the Towers for scores. Final
scoreline 1-14 to 0-07 to the SHamrocks. Best for Shamrocks were James Power ,
Sean Dunne and Scott Conroy .
Shamrocks reserves continue their winning
ways
North London Shamrocks 1-13
Round Towers 1-04
The second part of the double header at Donkey Lane proved to be an
entertaining affair between North London Shamrocks reserves and Round Towers
reserves. Played in glorious weather conditions and on a very good surface both
teams served up an entertaining game of football.
The shamrocks got off to a good start and went into an early lead
thanks to good scores from Scott Conroy and Tom Capliss while a well taken goal
from Shane Gallagher seemed to indicate that an easy victory was on the cards
for the home side. However, the towers responded positively and an
opportunistic goal from their corner forward brought the south-siders back into
contention at half time.
However, some strong and inspirational words from
manager/coach/player Vinny Murphy led to the shamrocks starting the second half
better than they finished the first. A good Kenny Fagan point, operating as a
holding midfielder, helped steady the nerves. Finally, Murphy couldn’t bear it
anymore and introduced the cavalry in the form of himself and Paul “the broom”
Ronane. The introductions worked a treat as the shamrocks began to pull away.
However, the point that sealed victory and both enthralled and shocked the
crowd in equal measure was a Paul Ronane special from out on the left hand
side with his left foot that curled majestically
over the cross bar. One witness commented that “it was the best point he has
ever seen in Donkey Lane”. Paul then proceeded to drive a shot wide from a
similar position.
Overall it proved to be a very good and hard-working victory with
plenty of excellent performances in the form of Peter Langan, Kenny Fagan,
Scott Conroy and substitutes Vinny
Murphy and Paul Ronane. It leaves
the shamrocks reserves with maximum points after three games of the league.
All going well
thus far in the season for the Shamrocks, but there is a long way to go yet for
both teams!!
